    In the summer of 2023, my mind was set on one destination: Mazatlán, Sinaloa, in México, to witness the spectacular solar eclipse. As I prepared for the trip, I started to look for a telescope to take to the trip. After weighing many options, I chose the Seestar S50. Its compact size, incredible portability, seamless connectivity, and robust hardware made it the obvious choice for a traveler like me.

    Scouting the Perfect Spot

    Upon arriving in Mazatlán, my first mission was to find the ideal location to set up. I eventually picked a beautiful spot right next to the beach, ensuring there were no palm trees, roofs, or other obstructions along the eclipse’s trajectory.
    This is a crucial step that many people overlook: a solar eclipse event lasts between two to three hours. If a tree or a building blocks your view halfway through the shoot, it can turn a dream trip into a tragic disappointment.

    An Unexpected Community

    The next morning, I went down to set up the telescope and find a comfortable place to sit. To my surprise, I noticed someone else scouting the area—and they were holding a Seestar too! Thanks to our shared passion and our Seestar telescopes, we connected instantly. It was amazing to find a fellow astronomer thousands of miles from home.
    Once aligned and with the solar filter securely installed, I switched the Seestar app to video mode, hit record, and waited for the magic to happen.

    Turning Into a "Telescope Expo"

    As the eclipse progressed, our Seestar S50 setups attracted lots of attention. Honestly, I felt like I was running a booth at a telescope expo! It was incredibly cool to talk about my hobby and share the experience with so many curious people. However, this popularity brought two unexpected challenges:

    2. The Elements: The beach was very windy, which introduced noticeable vibrations into the setup.
    By the end of the event, these two factors left me with a very shaky, unstable eclipse video. Since I was a rookie at the time, I had to do some quick research on how to fix it. This was back before AI-powered stabilization tools were everywhere, so I had to manually smooth out the movement and enhance the frames using apps like PowerDirector and Snapseed. In the end, I managed to rescue the footage!

    Looking back at that incredible experience, I learned a lot of valuable lessons. If you are planning to shoot a solar eclipse or a major transit, here is my checklist to ensure a flawless session:
    • Map the Trajectory: Always choose a location entirely free of sky obstacles.
    • Pack Extra Power Bank: Bring a reliable power bank. Video shooting modes can consume a lot of battery during long sessions, so it's always better to be prepared.
    • Shield Against Wind and Crowds: Take your time during installation. Try to find or create a small buffer zone so that wind and enthusiastic bystanders won’t cause unwanted camera vibrations.
    • Update in Advance: Download and install all app and firmware updates days before the event. Give yourself time to get used to any new features or software layouts.
    • Don't Forget Your Eyes: Bring proper solar eclipse glasses so you can enjoy the visual spectacle with your own eyes while your telescope does the heavy lifting.
    • Double-Check the App: It sounds simple, but in the excitement of totality, don't forget to actually press the "Record" button!
    • Live in the Moment: Don't get so caught up in the technology that you miss the magic. A total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will stay locked in your memory forever.
